Saminsky, Lazare
(1882-1959)
   American composer, of Russian origin. He studied at the University of St Petersburg and with Rimsky-Korsakov at the conservatory there. A founder of the Society for Jewish Folk Music, he went to the Caucasus in 1913 as a member of an ethnological expedition. In 1923 he settled in New York, where he became music director of Temple Emanu-El. He wrote symphonies, including Jerusalem, City of Solomon and Christ, liturgical choruses and Hebrew services. His writings include Music of Our Day, Music of the Ghetto and the Bible and Living Music of the Americas.
